This amino acid, known as tryptophan is naturally occurring in milk, and can theoretically make you sleepy. That’s because tryptophan binds to our body in a way that triggers certain neurotransmitters in our brain. Serotonin, the hormone of happiness and relaxation is one of them.

You may know that lack of this hormone can cause us to feel sad and depressed, so drinking warm milk at night may relax us and sweep the negative thoughts away. Although scientists know that tryptophan, which can also be found in chicken, turkey, and other dairy products is supposed to make someone feel sleepy, there’s no evidence that the amount of tryptophan in these foods will truly make you sleepy.

Swap Warm Milk With Cold Milk

All of the alternate milks you recommend promote sleep. Each are recommend to assist with improved sleep, soooo….looking for one that does not do this . Coconut milk is one I have yet to research. All others act like regular milk and are often recommended by PCPs to help their patients promote sleep. This information is on line; to recommend such milks to assist with alertness, does not seem to be accurate.
